It all began in August 2022 when Abeni first saw Herma during a fellowship at church. On the same day, they both attended a lunch following a young adults retreat. While Herma had participated in the retreat, Abeni had only joined for lunch at the invitation of some friends. Excited for the opportunity, he didn’t think twice about showing up. But as fate would have it, the group split into separate tables for men and women, and Abeni didn’t get the chance to even say “hi” to Herma.

What Abeni didn’t realize at the time was that his family had already been telling him about Herma. They spoke about how beautiful and wonderful she was, planting the first seeds of curiosity in his heart. Meanwhile, Herma’s family had a positive impression of Abeni as well. A few people around them also suggested their union—even before they themselves could imagine it. It seemed like something beautiful was already in motion.

At the time, Abeni had just moved to the U.S. from Italy three weeks prior, still adjusting to his new life. A few weeks later, he attended a Friday night young adults program, where he briefly met Herma’s brother. The two hit it off, and Herma’s brother even gave Abeni and his cousins a ride home since they lived nearby.

The following week, Abeni asked for another ride to church, and this time, Herma happened to be in the car too. She was funny, friendly, and effortlessly charming, leaving quite the impression on Abeni. Soon after, on another ride, Abeni seized the opportunity to ask Herma a few questions, slowly growing more intrigued by her.

Abeni, using a little strategy, started a conversation with Herma through Instagram, which eventually led to him asking for her number. From then on, he would check in with her daily, sending sweet messages. He even invited her to join a group basketball game—though it was a casual gathering, he was secretly thrilled when she said yes.

After weeks of messaging, Abeni built up the courage to call Herma. Each call brought them closer, and finally, he asked her out on their first date. By then, he had just bought his first car in the U.S., and their date became his first adventure driving on American highways. Let’s just say he missed a few exits, losing his cool each time, but Herma stayed calm and patient (or at least she tried to appear so).

Their first date was simple yet special—kombucha and Napoleon cake at Whole Foods in Columbia, followed by a short walk before Herma’s mom called her home to avoid the dark. It was perfect. They talked, laughed, and connected. Abeni knew he had found someone truly special.

Before Abeni asked Herma to be his girlfriend, they both decided to take their time to pray. Abeni prayed for wisdom and courage, and Herma also prayed for guidance before accepting. Their faith was the foundation of their decision, and they trusted God to lead them. On Valentine’s Day 2023, Abeni finally asked Herma to be his girlfriend. Though she hesitated at first, after much thought and prayer, she said yes. From that day forward, their love journey truly began.

Over the next year, they built countless memories filled with fun, laughter, and love. They leaned on prayer to guide them and to help their relationship grow. They felt God’s blessings throughout their journey, and it became clear that they were meant for each other.

In April 2024, after weeks of planning and nervous excitement, Abeni proposed to Herma the day before her birthday. With a joyful heart and a big smile, Herma said “YES!”

Now, as they prepare to say I do on June 15, 2025—a beautiful summer day—they’re excited to begin their forever together. Their love story continues, and they can’t wait to share this next chapter with all of you.
